The week in bite size chunks – 13th February 2022

The UK economy grew by 7.5% in 2021, a record, following a 9.4% contraction in GDP in 2020. This means the economy remains smaller than pre-pandemic levels. 2022 forecast growth is currently 4.8%.

The Metropolitan Police Commissioner, Cressida Dick, resigned following a public display of no confidence from the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan. Despite spiralling knife crime, just 5% of burglaries solved, less than 1% of rape cases leading to conviction and officers taking the knee at a BLM protest, ultimately it was the discovery of a WhatsApp group comprising Met Police officers including extremely offensive, politically incorrect language that ended her tenure. Priti Patel has begun the process of choosing a successor with Khan threatening to veto any candidate who does not have a plan to deal with homophobia, transphobia, misogyny and racism.

Boris Johnson announced that subject to continued trending, the government will bring forth proposals to lift the remaining COVID-19 restrictions from 24th February. It is unclear if they will also abolish the Coronavirus Act that grants them the emergency powers to lockdown, introduce vaccine mandates or impose face mask wearing.

Guto Harri reprised his role with Boris Johnson during his time as Mayor of London by becoming Downing Street’s new Director of Communications. Harri who is an ardent Remainer and whose short time at GBNews ended when he took the knee on live television left a consultancy role, which included advocating for Huawei to accept the post.

A state of emergency was introduced in Ottawa as the government became increasingly vexed by the Freedom Convoy which has now been in place for 2 weeks. As well as setting up soup kitchens for the homeless and bouncy castles for children, despite a ban on fuel being taken to protesters, hundreds of Ottawans took Jerry cans in open defiance. Other Freedom Convoys are planned in Brussels and New Zealand, amongst others.

The Russians remained poised to invade Ukraine with 100,000 troops and hardware on the border. Vladimir Putin continued to demand assurances that Ukraine, where 30M Russians live, will never be allowed to join NATO.

Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director General of the World Health Organisation (“WHO”), attended the Winter Olympics as a guest of the Chinese Communist Party. After the WHO’s whitewash investigation into the Wuhan Institute of Virology which is now broadly accepted as the genesis of COVID-19, a little sports washing confirmed both parties have no shame, despite millions of deaths worldwide.

Nadine Dorries threatened to extend the scope of the enemy of free speech Online harms bill to include tasteless humour following an off colour joke by comedian Jimmy Carr. The joke relating to gypsies and the Holocaust was shown on the subscription streaming service, Netflix, under the heading “Jimmy Carr: His Dark Materials”.

Prince William attended Expo 2020 in Dubai, in his latest “Great Reset” excursion.
